in the development of uveal melanoma,
the primary malignancy of the eye. A recent study characterized
the role of certain calcium-binding proteins in this disease.
ALG-2, a calcium-binding protein involved in programmed cell
death, is down-regulated in uveal melanoma. Dr. Polans’
group used the SPRimager®II to study interactions between
ALG-2 and the protein Annexin XI. The team obtained more reproducible
measurements of this calcium-dependent protein-protein interaction
using the SPRimager®II platform than with a vastly more
expensive SPR instrument. The
superior result is likely due to the dextran-free surface
used for the SPRimager®II analysis, which allowed for more
stable immoblization of Annexin XI. |
